The SOMNOS Study is a medical research study that is being conducted by physicians of The Johns Hopkins University with support from the National Institutes of Health.
The primary objective of this research study is to investigate whether treatment of obstructive sleep apnea with positive pressure therapy leads to improvements in glucose metabolism.
Sleep apnea is a chronic condition where a person has periods of shallow or no breathing during sleep. Those affected by sleep apnea often snore, have poor sleep quality, and report excessive daytime sleepiness. Medical research has shown that sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure and may also contribute to heart disease. Changes in glucose metabolism precede the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, which can eventually cause eye, kidney, and heart disease.
